Pharmaceutical
Levaquin

LevaquinLevaquin (levofloxacin) is a Fluoroquinole class antibiotic typically prescribed for the treatment of bronchitis, sinusitis, pneumonia and skin and urinary tract infections. Levaquin, manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Janssen Pharmaceutical, was approved by the FDA in December of 1996.

Misused Antibiotic

Levaquin was originally intended to be used as a last resort antibiotic but doctors may not have been told that by the manufacturer. The drug company aggressively marketed Levaquin as an antibiotic of first choice, when it should have been used only when other drugs failed. One Levaquin law suit alleges that Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical did not provide adequate warnings to doctors and patients about the possibility of Levaquin causing such severe side effects.

Levaquin Side Effects - Tendonitis or Tendon Rupture

In July of 2008, the FDA issued a “black box warning” (the strongest warning issued by the FDA) to inform consumers of the risk of developing tendonitis and/or tendon rupture, which can occur during the use of or even after completion of the use of Levaquin. Ruptures of the Achilles, shoulder, hand and other tendons are the most common. The tendon most frequently associated to the Levaquin- induced ruptures is the Achilles tendon. The symptoms of tendonitis or tendon rupture include pain, swelling or inflammation in a tendon area, a snap or pop in a tendon area and the inability to move or bear weight in the affected area. In some cases, such ruptures could result in prolonged disability and may eventually require surgical repair.

Other possible side effects include hypoglycemic reactions (in diabetics), convulsions, tremors, restlessness, anxiety, lightheadedness, confusion, hallucinations, paranoia, depression, nightmares, insomnia and fast or pounding heartbeat. The most common Levaquin side effects are nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dizziness, rash and vaginitis in women.
