Gadolinium is a rare metal used in magnetic resonance imaging known as an MRI to enhance the images of pictures taken by the MRI. Gadolinium is most commonly used in the type of MRI known as Magnetic Resonance Angiograhy or MRA. In this particular type of MRI, the dose of Gadolinium has to be tripled making it extremely hard for the body to extract all of it and leaves the patient at risk of serious Gadolinium side effects.

Not Approved by FDA

The FDA has never approved Gadolinium for this type of use, yet is becoming more and more popular in these types of MRI's/MRA's.

Gadolinium Side Effects

Two of the most common serious side effects linked to the use of Gadolinium are NSF, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and NFD, nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy. Some of the early warnings signs of NSF or NFD can be burning, swelling, itching, tightening or hardening of the skin, stiffening joints, yellow or white spots in the eyes, muscle weakness and red or dark patches on the skin.
