Chantix for Smoking Cessation

Chantix (generic name varenicline) is use to treat smoking addiction by reducing cravings and decreasing the pleasurable effects of cigarettes and other tobacco products. Chantix was approved by the FDA in May 2006 and quickly made available for sale in August of the same year after receiving a “priority review” by the FDA in February, shortening the usual review period due to its demonstrated effectiveness and lack of safety issues in clinical trials.

Chantix Side Effects

According to an analysis of post-marketing adverse effects conducted by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, Chantix accounted for the most reports of serious side effects than any other drug for the fourth quarter of 2007. Reported side effects of Chantix included suicidal acts and ideation, psychosis, hostility and aggression. During the first quarter of 2008 the FDA had received 227 domestic reports of suicidal acts, thoughts, or behaviors; 397 cases of possible psychosis and 525 reports of hostility or aggression. These totals included 28 cases of suicide, 41 mentions of homicidal ideation, 60 cases of paranoia, and 55 cases of hallucination.

This analysis also revealed a greater spectrum of side effects beyond suicide and depression including 224 reports of potential cardiac rhythm disturbance, 86 cases of seizure, 148 reports of vision problems, and 544 reports of glycemic control (diabetes).
